I am a professional carpet cleaner in Tampa FL and I have tried just about every type of homemade carpet cleaner you can think of. Some homemade cleaners are pretty good and some are really dangerous not only to your carpet but to your health as well. Consumer carpet cleaners can even be worse. They dump a lot of soaps and sufactants into a water based solution that leaves a ton of dirt attracting residue behind after cleaning. They can start to recollect soil before they even dry. My least favorites are Spot Shot and Resolve. Unfortunately they're two of the best selling consumer carpet cleaners on the market. They're not good for you and they re-soil quickly.
Here is the recipe for my favorite homemade carpet cleaner:
Carbonated water - You can use seltzer water, sparkling water, or soda water
Vinegar - distilled, white, or apple cider vinegar
Mix the and the carbonated water and the vinegar at a 1 to 1 ratio. That's it.
Pour the mixture directly on the spot or stain and let it sit for 30 seconds. Yes, you have to be patient for 30 seconds and let it work. Then blot it up with a white towel. Repeat these steps as necessary. after you have removed the spot take a second towel and place it where the spot was, and stand on it for 30 seconds. Yes, another 30 seconds.
The benefits of this cleaning solution are:
Its completely green, no toxins, no chemicals. Its completely safe. It's extremely powerful when cleaning water based spots. It leaves no dirt attracting residues, so it does not re-soil. Best of all its extremely cheap to make.
If you just spilled coffee, tea, or juice on your carpet you can remove it quickly and safely with this homemade carpet cleaner. If it's to stubborn to remove call a professional carpet cleaner. I recommend Chem-Dry of Tampa FL, if we cant get the stain out no one can.
