Facts You Need to Know About Pet Urine in Your Carpeting:
Pet urine removal is crucial to keeping your carpet clean and healthy. Urine deposited on carpet does not stay there, it penetrates the fibers and contaminates both the backing of the carpet and the flooring material below the carpet. Often, without your knowing, pets will urinate continually in the same general location. Urine odors can permeate from the floor, be it cement or wood, from the tack strip, and even from the framework of the house behind the walls.
As the urine dries, the liquid evaporates but the urine crystals become even more concentrated and pungent. Simple cleaning will not remove this odor. Until recently, there was not a product available that was effective at removing urine odors.
How to Clean Pet Urine from Your Carpet
If you find a pet urine stain in your carpet the first thing you should do is heavily saturate the urine spot with hot water. The goal is to flush out as much of the urine as possible, and hot water will help break down the urine crystals that have formed. Press down firmly with your foot or shoe on the soaked stain to make sure the hot water gets in to the carpet pad and the sub floor. After saturating the pet stain with hot water use a wet/dry vacuum or a consumer grade portable carpet extractor to remove as much of the standing water as possible. Then use a dry white towel to remove extra moisture. Finally, use a fan to help dry the wet area faster. This will help prevent a brown spot from forming on the carpet.
Don’t use spot removers or vinegar for pet urine removal
Spot removers and home remedies, like vinegar, will not break down the urine crystals in the carpet or carpet padding, allowing the urine smell to return or spreading the urine further. Hot water is the best solution for your pet urine stain removal. Always feel free to rinse and repeat to make sure you have adequately flushed all of the urine out of your carpet.
